Brief
history of the cinemas in Mestre
- The first picture hall of Mestre was installed in 1905 or
in 1906 in a building in the square today called Ferretto,
more precisely in the actual Matter Small Square, between
the Tower of the Clock and the building at the age
occupied by the Iris Bar.
- In 1908 or in 1911 the Cinema Excelsior, in liberty style,
was built. From 1913 the movies were screened by snatches
also in the Toniolo Theatre.
- At least since 1928 the Cinema Marconi had been existing
in Palazzo St. in Mestre, after being bought by the
Furlan family in 1932; in 1989 it was interily restored,
getting two different picture halls, and its name was
changed into Cinema Palazzo.
- The greatest cinema of Mestre is today the Cinema Theatre
Corso, that was inaugurated in 1949 under the name of
Cinema Impero; at the age there were controversies by
someone who thought that it had been built in a too
suburban place, although it could sound paradoxical today,
as it's nowadays in a very central area, after the fast
building growth of the 20th century in Mestre; inside it,
since 1987, another picture hall was built, the Corsino,
that made the Corso be the first "multihall" of
Veneto.
- The cinema Concordia, in Carducci St. behind the former
Standa, was born as a parish cinema, it was bought by the
Furlan family in 1950, then it was demoshed and rebuilt
under the name of Agorą Mignon (afterwards Mignon and
finally Mignon Arthouse), survived for several years
before being definitively closed in 2005.
- The Toniolo Theatre beame again also a Cinema between
1983 and 1991.
- From 1981 the Excelsior became again also a theatre and,
after the restoration of 2000, is actually formed by
three different halls (Excelsior 1, 2 and 3).
- From 1951 a new urban quarter began to be built: "Villaggio
San Marco"; in order to provide for this area also a
cinema, along the homonymic avenue the Cinema San Marco
was opened in 1963; but in 2006 it was closed.
- The cinema Piave was bought by the Furlan family in 1933;
afterwards it was sold to other owners, and it became a
cinema for blue-movies before 1990.
- The Cinema Dante was created and run by the Railway
Dopolavoro (a club with recreational facilities), since
the 20s as a recreational hall, which sometimes movies
were screened in, untill, from 1948, a stable motion-picture
projector was put in it; between 1950 and 1965 the
omnipresent Furlan family took part also in the
management of the Dante; since 1982 the Cinema Dante is
being part in the Circuit Cinema and is run with a joint
work by the Commune of Venice.
- Parish or minute cinemas were opened in the past (and
sometimes still exist): they are Lux and Capitol at
Carpenedo, Disney in Piave St., Eden at Chirignago,
Sociale at Favaro, Bevilacqua at Zelarino, Verdi at
Gazzera, Marco Polo at Campalto.
- Among these we remind the in particular the small cinema
of Giustizia St., the "Tag", built in 1976 and
closed in 1982 for safety reasons.
- In the last years also in Mestre as everywhere some of
the central cinemas has been closing and suburb multi-halls
are increasing, such as, since 2000, the Warner Village
at Marcon (at the north-east of Mestre) and, since 2004,
the Cinestar Mestre at Mestre south-west (Marghera).
