Brief history of the theatres in Mestre

THEATRE BALBI (1778 - 1811): Smart and, for the age, innovating building that the Balbi family, together with other financer, made to be build at the beginning of Canal Salso, between Barche Square and Mestrina St. The Theatre Balbi was projected by the architect Bernardino Maccaruzzi and built between 1778 and 1779; it contained the Francesco Battaglioli's and Domenico Mauro's decorations and paintings. It was often patronized by the venetian aristocracy, but it was demolished already in 1811. Today it's recalled only by the name of "Gallery of the old theatre".

THEATRE GARIBALDI (1840 - 1908): Wretched wooden building built in 1840 in the main square, beside Palace Da Re. In 1908 it was closed for safety reasons.

THEATRE TONIOLO: Built by Domenico Toniolo in 1913, with neo-classical - Palladian façade and, inside, stuccos by the Antonio Miotti's firm and an Alessandro Pomi's fresco. Since then the "Toniolo" Theatre was both a theatre and a cinema. Still now it's the main theatre of Mestre, recently bought by the Commune. Except for it, there are minor theatres, as Aurora at Marghera (Mestre south), the tiny Teatrino della Murata and the other ones listed above.
